🔍 What's happening in this photo

The bag front is split vertically into two panels. Left: plain neutral canvas — dark outlines of the daisy pop sharply. Right: soft blush grid-weave fabric — its pink lines echo the pink tones in the zinnia. The flower straddles the seam. That's the trick.

💡 The designer's insight

The right fabric was chosen TO MATCH the right side of the design — pink zinnia = pink grid. The left fabric contrasts — plain = daisy. Two fabrics, one design, zero coincidence.

📐 Seam position

The vertical seam runs roughly through the center of the flower stem — exactly where the two flowers meet. This is intentional: the seam follows a visual boundary already in the design.

🏆 What do we gain from two fabrics?

Visual depth

Two textures make the eye travel across the bag. The contrast between matte plain and structured grid creates dimension without any extra embellishment.

Design amplification

The fabric echoes the embroidery colors — the pink grid literally continues the pink in the zinnia petals. The design and the fabric become one composition.

Smart fabric use

You don't need a large cut of either fabric. Two smaller remnants combine into one statement piece — perfect for using up beautiful scraps.

🦋

Uniqueness

No two bags will ever be identical. Even with the same design, different fabric combinations produce completely different results — every bag is a one-of-a-kind.

🧶 How to choose your two fabrics

The rule is simple: one fabric per side of the design, chosen to echo what the embroidery is doing on that side. In our example:

Plain linen or canvas

Neutral — warm grey or natural ecru. No pattern. Lets dark sketch outlines of the daisy read with maximum contrast and clarity.

Blush grid-weave cotton

Soft pink grid lines in the same tone as the zinnia embroidery. The fabric texture continues the visual language of the pink flower.

💡 Expert tip — the grey variant

The same concept works beautifully with grey tones on the left: a fine grey grid or herringbone that echoes the dark charcoal sketch outlines of the design. Left = grey structure, right = blush softness. The embroidery bridges both worlds. Try reversing for a completely different mood.

⚠️ Fabric weight must match

Both panels must be the same weight — medium-weight cotton or linen (120–200 g/m²). Mismatched weights cause the bag to pull toward the heavier side and make embroidery registration impossible. If your grid fabric is lighter, interface it to match.

Interface both front panels 🧱

Fuse medium-weight woven interfacing to the wrong side of both left and right front panels. This is what keeps the embroidery stable and prevents the panels from warping differently after stitching.

Join the two panels 🪡

Sew left and right front panels together along the center vertical seam, right sides facing. Press seam open. Topstitch 2mm on each side of the seam for a clean finish — this also helps flatten it for hooping.

Mark embroidery center precisely 📐

Mark the center point of the design with a water-soluble pen. The center should be ON or very close to the seam — so the design spans both fabrics equally. Use a light table or window to check alignment before hooping.

The seam crossing the hoop area is fine — the interfacing keeps it rigid. Embroider at 80% speed.

Attach handles ✂️

Fold handle strips in thirds lengthwise and topstitch both edges. Position 10 cm from each side, pin with 3 cm inside the bag before the final top seam. Consider matching handles to the plain panel fabric — keeps the neutral anchor.

✨ Design & styling tips

💡 The seam is a design decision

Don't hide the seam — celebrate it. A contrasting topstitch in a tonal color (or even the same thread as the embroidery outline) makes the join look intentional and couture rather than patchwork-casual.

🎨 Similar projects in the craft world

This technique is used in quilted tote bags (two-block panels), Japanese boro patchwork bags, and color-blocked fashion totes. The key difference here: the embroidery is specifically designed around the seam — not placed on a single panel.

✔️ Which designs work for this technique

Best candidates: designs with two distinct elements side by side (two flowers, butterfly wings, a vase with blooms). The seam falls between the elements. Avoid highly symmetric single-center designs — they need to split perfectly and any drift shows.

⚠️ Test before you cut

Before cutting your fashion fabric, stitch on a test piece of the same weight. Check that the thread tension doesn't change as the needle crosses the seam ridge — even a well-pressed seam adds a tiny height variation that can shift tension by half a point.

✨ Variation idea — grey left panel

For the left panel: try a fine grey chambray or a subtle grey graph-check cotton. Its structure mirrors the dark charcoal sketch lines of the design outline. Result: left side feels architectural and crisp, right side feels romantic and soft. The embroidery is the bridge.

But what if the stabilizer is on the pretty side of your design and you’re unsure how to remove it? This happens more often than you think—especially when working on toy faces or delicate embroidery details.

If you’re staring at a thin, transparent plastic foil over your embroidery and don’t know whether to cut, tear, or dissolve it—this guide is for you.

What Is That Transparent Foil? 🤔

Most likely, the “plastic” you see is not really plastic but a water-soluble stabilizer (WSS).

It’s used to hold stitches together during embroidery, especially on tricky fabrics like towels, plush, or felt.

Once the embroidery is complete, the stabilizer is removed—usually with water.

Step 1: Test a Small Area First 🧪

👉 Pro Tip: Always start with a small corner or cut-off piece.

Snip a little edge of the foil.

Run it under warm water.

If it begins to dissolve—yes, it’s WSS.

✅ This way, you don’t risk damaging your whole embroidery.

Step 2: If It’s Water-Soluble 🌊

If the stabilizer dissolves:

Place the embroidery under warm running water.

Let the foil melt away.

Pat gently with a towel and allow it to air-dry.

⚠️ Avoid rubbing the stitches while wet—the threads can distort!

Step 3: If It’s Not Water-Soluble ✂️

On rare occasions, it could be heat-away stabilizer or a tear-away version:

Tear-away: Gently rip around the stitches. The embroidery itself will hold, but go slowly.

Heat-away: Apply a warm iron with a pressing cloth. The foil will shrink and disappear.

👉 If you’re unsure—stick to testing first.

Professional Tips & Tricks 💡

📌 Tip 1: Always ask your supplier which stabilizer was used. It saves a lot of guessing.

📌 Tip 2: Keep scraps of stabilizer from your project. That way, you can test methods without risking the finished piece.

📌 Tip 3: For delicate designs (like toy faces), avoid aggressive tearing. Water is usually the safest solution.

📌 Tip 4: If you need the gift urgently—use warm water carefully on just the visible areas instead of soaking the whole toy.

Final Thoughts 🎁

Don’t panic if you see “plastic” over your embroidery. Most likely, it’s water-soluble stabilizer that’s meant to vanish with water. Labubu plush toy with your embroidery machine. This project uses two applique embroidery files to create the front and back of the soft toy.

Designs available Labubu soft toy embroidery design

✂️ What You’ll Need:

Embroidery machine

Two embroidery files:

lalabu7_HEIGHT.format
– Front side

lalabu7a_HEIGHT.format
– Back side

Fabric for the toy (felt, fleece, or minky recommended)

Stabilizer (cut-away or tear-away)

Embroidery thread (various colors)

Scissors

Stuffing (polyfill or cotton)

Sewing machine or needle & thread (for final assembly)

🪡 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Files

Choose the file size that fits your embroidery hoop. Each toy comes in matched front/back file pairs:

Front:
lalabu7_100.pes
(for example, 100mm height)

Back:
lalabu7a_100.pes

2. Embroider the Front Side

Hoop the stabilizer and fabric.

Load the front design file (
lalabu7_...
).

Follow the embroidery steps to stitch the face, body, and all design details.

After finishing, remove from hoop, but do not cut around the outline yet.

3. Embroider the Back Side

Hoop stabilizer and fabric again.

Load the back design file (
lalabu7a_...
).

Run the stitching – this will outline only the shape of the toy (no details).

4. Cut Out the Shapes

Carefully cut around the stitched outlines on both pieces.

Add seam allowance (~5 mm) around the edges of both front and back parts when cutting.

5. Assemble the Toy

Place the front and back fabric pieces right sides together.

Sew along the outline, leaving a small opening (about 2-3 cm) at the bottom or side.

Turn the toy right side out.

Stuff the toy with filling.

Close the opening with a hidden hand stitch or a topstitch on a sewing machine.

📦 Notes:

Make sure to match the correct size front and back files before starting.

Design files are provided in several sizes to fit different hoops.

Embroidery files include clear stitch lines for cutting and sewing.

🧷 File Naming Summary:

<colgroup><col style="min-width:20px;"><col style="min-width:20px;"><col style="min-width:20px;"></colgroup>

Part

File Name Example

Description

Front Side

lalabu7_120.pes

Front design with face

Back Side

lalabu7a_120.pes

Outline-only back piece
