🧵 What You’ll Need: Materials & Tools 📦

Materials

  • Quilting cotton or canvas for the outer fabric

  • Cotton or cotton-blend fabric for lining

  • Insulating batting or fusible fleece for warmth

  • Medium-weight stabilizer for embroidered panel

  • Thread for sewing + embroidery thread

  • Elastic cord or loop + button/closure

  • Embroidery design such as the Hedgehog Bouquet

  • Optional trims: ribbon, ric-rac, patch pockets

Tools
✂️ Sewing machine
🪡 Embroidery machine
📏 Ruler & measuring tape
🧷 Pins or clips
🪶 Scissors / rotary cutter

📏 Step-by-Step Instructions 🧵

1. Measure Your Mug or Thermos

Measure the height and circumference of the object that you want to cover.

📌 Example: If the cup is 10″ around and 4″ tall, add seam allowances — aim for about 11″ × 4.5″ for the fabric piece.

2. Prepare Your Embroidery Panel

  1. Cut a rectangle from your outer fabric slightly larger than your measured cozy piece.

  2. Spray-adhere stabilizer to the back.

  3. Center your embroidery design (like the Hedgehog with lilacs) and hoop the fabric with stabilizer.

  4. Stitch the design.

  5. Trim excess stabilizer and cut your panel to the cozy dimensions.

3. Layer and Sew

  1. Cut:

    • Outer embroidered panel

    • Batting piece

    • Lining piece

  2. Lay them in this order: batting (bottom) → lining (right side up) → embroidered outer (right side down).

  3. Pin or clip in place.

  4. Sew around three edges, leaving a small gap to turn right-side out.

4. Add Elastic & Closure

  • Sew an elastic loop on one short end (about 3–5″), then add a button on the opposite side after turning. This creates a nice closure around the handle.

5. Turn & Finish

  • Turn the cozy right-side out through the gap.

  • Press seams flat.

  • Top-stitch around edges for strength.

👉 Your cozy should now wrap around the mug or thermos snugly! 🙂

💡 Pro Tips from Sewing Pros 🧠

📌 Insulation Matters: Use batting or fusible fleece between layers to improve heat retention — especially useful for thermos covers.

📌 Seam Alignment: Mark the center of your mug/thermos and match it to your embroidered motif — keeps it centered and visually balanced.

📌 Add Pockets or Embellishments: Consider sewing a small front pocket for tea bags or spoons — functional and charming!

📌 Fabric Choice: Quilting cotton is a favorite because it’s easy to sew and holds stitches well. Avoid slippery fabrics for beginners.

📌 Creative Closures: Swap buttons for Velcro, snaps, or decorative ribbons for a different look and feel.
