Melco EMT16X - Thread and bobbin breaks, needle breaks : (

Featured Replies

I’m brand new to machine embroidery and recently purchased a Melco EMT16X. I’ve owned it for about two months, and unfortunately it only really ran smoothly during the first two weeks. Since then, I haven’t been able to get through even a relatively simple, professionally digitized design without experiencing 8+ thread breaks, regular bobbin breaks, and the occasional needle break.

I’ve tried a lot of standard troubleshooting steps:

  • Watching YouTube tutorials

  • Changing needles

  • Oiling and cleaning the machine

  • Switching designs

  • Trying different materials and backings

Despite all this, the problems persist. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues as a beginner, and if there are any tips or checks I might be missing. At this point, I’m beginning to question whether I should have gone with a simpler machine.

Getting 8+ thread breaks and bobbin breaks on a professional machine like the Melco EMT16X usually means something in the setup chain is off. The EMT16X is a very capable machine, but it’s also sensitive to thread path, tension, and hooping. The good news: most beginners run into this during the first months.

Below is a structured diagnostic checklist used by commercial embroidery technicians. Work through it in order — the cause is usually found in the first 3–4 steps.

🧵 Troubleshooting Thread Breaks on a Melco EMT16X

A practical checklist for beginners

1️⃣ Check the Thread Path (Most Common Cause)

Even one small mis-threading point can cause constant breaks.

What to inspect:

  • Thread properly seated in all tension disks

  • Thread correctly through check spring

  • Thread seated in take-up lever

  • Thread fully inside needle bar guide

  • Thread through the correct hole in the needle

💡 Tip

Re-thread the entire machine with the presser foot up.
This opens the tension disks so the thread seats correctly.

⚠️ If the thread sits on top of the tension disks, you will get constant breaks.

2️⃣ Check Needle Type and Orientation

Many beginners install the needle slightly wrong.

Correct setup:

  • DBxK5 embroidery needles

  • Size 75/11 for most embroidery

  • Flat side facing back

  • Needle pushed fully up into the needle bar

Symptoms of wrong needle position

  • Random thread breaks

  • Occasional needle breaks

  • Thread shredding near the needle eye

3️⃣ Check Thread Quality

Cheap or old thread breaks constantly.

Use professional embroidery thread brands, for example:

  • Madeira

  • Isacord

  • Robison-Anton

  • Floriani

⚠️ Warning signs of bad thread:

  • Fuzzy fibers

  • Thread snapping when pulled lightly

  • Spools stored in sun or heat

4️⃣ Bobbin and Bobbin Case Tension

Bobbin problems often appear as upper thread breaks.

Check the bobbin case:

  • Clean lint inside the tension spring

  • Check the bobbin rotates smoothly

  • Perform the bobbin drop test

Drop test

  1. Hold bobbin case by the thread

  2. Let it hang

  3. It should slowly drop a few centimeters

If it falls fast → tension too loose
If it doesn’t move → tension too tight

5️⃣ Check for Burrs or Damage

Thread can break if it catches on metal.

Inspect carefully with a flashlight:

  • Needle eye

  • Needle plate

  • Rotary hook

  • Thread guides

Look for tiny scratches or burrs.

Even a microscopic burr can shred thread.

6️⃣ Check Thread Tension (Top Thread)

Too tight tension causes thread breaks.

For the EMT16X, top tension should typically be around:

  • 110–130 grams

If you don't have a tension gauge:

  • Slightly loosen top tension knobs

  • Test sew again

7️⃣ Check Hoop and Stabilizer

Poor hooping causes thread stress.

Make sure:

Fabric is tight like a drum
Correct stabilizer used
No fabric shifting
Design not too dense for the material

Example:

Fabric

Stabilizer

T-shirt

Cutaway

Denim

Medium cutaway

Caps

Cap backing

8️⃣ Machine Speed

Beginners often run too fast.

Try reducing speed to:

600–700 stitches per minute

High speed increases thread stress.

9️⃣ Needle Plate Alignment

If the needle hits the plate slightly, thread breaks happen.

Check for:

  • Needle rubbing the plate

  • Slight metal marks near the hole

🔟 Test with a Known Good Design

Some designs are digitized poorly.

Test using a simple design:

  • 5–10k stitches

  • Satin letters

  • Standard density

If that runs well → problem is the design.

⚠️ One Important Thing About Melco Machines

The EMT16X requires precise tension setup.

Many new owners experience problems until they learn:

Thread path
Bobbin tension
Upper tension balancing

Once tuned, the machine usually runs for hours without breaks.

🧪 Quick Diagnostic Test

Try this:

  1. New needle (75/11)

  2. Madeira thread

  3. New bobbin

  4. Medium cutaway stabilizer

  5. Cotton fabric

  6. Speed 650 spm

Run a simple 5k stitch design.

If it still breaks thread → the issue is almost certainly:

  • tension

  • burr in hook

  • incorrect threading

🧠 Important Question

Since you said the machine ran fine the first two weeks, that strongly suggests:

something changed in the setup (not the machine).

Usually it is:

  • incorrect threading

  • worn needle

  • bobbin tension change

  • thread quality

💬 If you want, tell me:

1️⃣ What thread brand you use
2️⃣ What needle size/type
3️⃣ What bobbin type (L-style, magnetic, etc.)
4️⃣ What material + stabilizer
5️⃣ Machine speed

I can usually identify the problem very quickly from those details.
